September events

The weather is cooling down (well, theoretically) and the calendar is heating up! Here are McCord Works events for September.

Saturday, September 4

First Saturday Arts Market
6-10 pm, with live entertainment
548 W 19th Street in the Heights
Houston TX 77008

First Saturday Arts Market is Houston’s longest running monthly outdoor fine arts event. Featuring local and regional artists whose offerings include original paintings, photography, jewelry, sculpture, wood and metal arts, ceramics and fiber arts.

Patrons visiting this mini-art festival for the first time are struck by the diversity of the art. Strolling through the glowing white canopies you may find pirate booty in the form of steampunk jewelry or an intricately woven sculpture made completely out of copper wire. Aromas of peppermint or lavender will lead you to a soap vendor with an artsy array of bars followed by tiny lace doilies, encircled in sterling silver forming the most amazing earrings!

September 10-26

Focus on Fiber, exhibit by Houston Area Fiber Artists
18 Hands Gallery
249 W. 19th Street, Suite B
Houston TX 77008

The Gallery Show is an annual juried competition open exclusively to HAFA members. The art selected represents the best new work created by members and reflects a diversity of materials, techniques and styles. The show is exhibited in a gallery in the greater Houston area, providing an opportunity for the public to develop an appreciation of fiber as an art form. This year’s exhibit, juried by Liz Axford, is at 18 Hands Gallery, on 19th Street in the Heights.

There is an opening reception on Friday, September 18, 6-9 pm.

September 9-11

Weaving and Beyond: Contemporary Handweavers of Houston Annual Sale
Houston Center for Contemporary Craft
4848 Main Street
Houston TX 77002

At its annual sale, CHH Guild members offer beautiful and functional hand-woven, hand-spun, hand-felted works of fine craft: fashions, linens, tapestries, baskets, jewelry, baby items, toys, gifts and decorations. CHH members use the finest materials from silk, wool and cotton to tencel, bamboo, wire and willow. Houston Center for Contemporary Craft is a special partner and supporter of the Contemporary Handweavers of Houston Annual Sale. HCCC is worth a visit whether we are having a sale or not! 2007 was our first time at this venue and the work of the guild was enhanced by the setting.

The website is all new and spiffy, and you can always check my Facebook and Flickr sites. New photos of silk thread jewelry are going up daily, and there should be new items up for sale at 1000 Markets very soon! Aaaaaand you can find me in retail galleries in three cities in Texas!

July news

Haven Gallery in Austin, Texas is now carrying my jewelry. Haven Gallery is a breathtaking gallery in downtown Austin that carries a variety of fine art and fine craft – just beautiful stuff. I’m very pleased to be in such good company!

My jewelry is also carried in Houston, Texas at The Artful Corner, in the Heights on White Oak Blvd. What a wonderful destination right here in the neighborhood!

And of course, I have the exhibit in Galveston in the Moody Library at UTMB through the end of July. “Actually, it is your grandmother’s crochet. But much smaller.”

Finally, the first Saturday in August brings us to White Linen Night in the Heights. Sultry, steamy, exotic, artfully provocative! One of the best evenings of the year in the historical Houston Heights!

Happy summer!

The new tiniest earrings

Five-eighths of an inch in diameter! Yep. This is what they look like. Once I finalized the design, making them was pretty easy. Naming them was harder. I learned a bit more about the Pittsburgh Steelers logo. The geometric shape is called “astroid,” but that was too close to asteroid. It looks kind of like a shuriken, a ninja throwing star. But that’s silly, right? Still, I kept coming back to that. So, behold, ninja stars!

Ninja stars, mushroom

Double ninja stars, true blue

Triple ninja stars!!!!, bright green

You can see more on my Flickr page, of course. Now I’ve decided that they look like Lantana buds, which dovetails nicely with my other flower names for crochet designs, but it’s too late. They’re ninja stars in my brain.

In the future I’ll mix and match colors. All I need is 25-26 hours per day, and I’ll be set!

Photos from UTMB exhibit

I took some photos of my exhibit at the Moody Library at UTMB in Galveston. The reflections from the two glass cases play funny tricks with the camera. See if you can spot the self-portrait! The exhibit is up through June and July.

Exhibit in Galveston

Wow! I have an exhibit opening this weekend at the Moody Library at UTMB in Galveston. It’s on the first floor lobby of the library. The exhibit will be up through June and July, and it’s free to the public. No photos yet, but I’ll fix that as soon as I can. I’ll also get some postcards out to coffeeshops and other happenin’ spots in Galveston. Whee!
