How it should be done
I have applied for the second year to a highly regarded show elsewhere in Texas. They tell you how many applications they got and how many artists they will invite in each category. They tell you how many will be wait listed. They tell you when they will notify you. If that date changes, they tell you right away. The jury is open to the public (first round, anyway). They give you directions and a jury schedule.
Last year, the first year I entered, I tried to be sneaky and enter in both jewelry and fiber art. They called me on it, and gave me the opportunity to amend my fiber art entry. I withdrew it instead, since I don’t have enough non-jewelry right now to make a go on a fiber art entry alone. They freakin’ refunded my entry fee. Seriously.
I will find out later today if I got in or not. If I didn’t, it’s okay. There’s a lot of competition in jewelry. I know exactly how much, because they told me. These folks impress the heck out of me, and I will keep applying. This is the way to do a large show.
Update: I didn’t get in. It’s okay.
